A discussion on the role of biobank in translational medicine research and development was held at the Shahid Dr Milton Hall of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Thursday.

The BSMMU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Deen Mohd Noorul Huq was present as chief guest at the discussion, said a press release.

Biobanks are of immense importance in medical research and services, including advancing translational medicine, said the VC, adding that translational medicine aimed to improve healthcare by using methods, resources and expertise.  

Mentioning that the prime minister Sheikh Hasina wants to establish biobank, he assured, ‘The present administration of the BSMMU is always ready and committed to establish biobank.’

Dr Arman Rahman, an assistant professor of the University College Dublin, was present as keynote speaker at the discussion.

He highlighted the importance of translational medicine and the need for translational research in order to apply translational medicine significantly in the medical field of Bangladesh. 

The University Grants Commission professor Dr Sajal Krishna Banerjee and chairman of the BSMMU pharmacology department Professor Dr Md Sayedur Rahman spoke in this regard. 

The BSMMU pro-vice-chancellor (administration) Professor Dr Saif Uddin Ahmed, pro-vice-chancellor (academic) Professor Dr Mohammed Atiqur Rahman, pro-vice-chancellor (research and development) Professor Dr Moniruzzaman Khan, registrar Professor Dr ABM Abdul Hannan, proctor Professor Dr Md Habibur Rahman Dulal, among others, were present at the programme, which was presided over by anatomy department chairman Professor Dr Laila Anjuman Banu.
